Great machine to run Ubuntu onOMG. A laptop like this, with this much horsepower would have been $1200 or $1400 a year or so ago. Let's look at the important specs:
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) II Neo K625 Dual-Core Processor 1.5GHz in Ubuntu.
L1 cache: 256k
L2 cache: 2M
Memory dual 2Gig DDR3 1033
1366x768 LED backlit display
Integrated Mobile Radeon HD 4225 video
320G Hitachi hard drive
First thing I did when I got it was shrink the windows partition and install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. I don't use windows except for games. I have a game box, so I might or might not ever use this for games. Probably not much.
With Ubuntu, everything just works. Seriously, it's a way easy install.
Step 1: Live boot, use gparted to shrink windows partition
Step 2: Install linux from same live boot, "along side current operating systems"
Step 3: Enjoy Ubuntu.
Video, audio, screen bright/dim, audio level up / down, wireless networking, etc. It all just works, and works so well.
This machine screams for something running on a "netbook" CPU. This CPU is an easy match for many mid tier notebooks out there. This machine spanks any of my friend's Atom based netbooks, and it spanks them hard. It also beats my old AMD dual core 1.8GHz laptop it's replacing. The Turion here running at 1.5GHz is noticeably faster than the Atom, and you've got two of them, not one. A part of that is the faster DDR3 1066MHz memory, which is 60% faster than the DDR2 667MHz memory in the Atom based machines. But also the CPU is just faster. And the integrated video...
The video is quick and snappy, and it can play 720p video with ease. The CPU hovers at 65% to 75% while doing so. My old ATI Radeon 1400 based laptop could never do that without tearing the video or dropping frames. And keep in mind, this good performance is in Ubuntu Linux, and Linux isn't known for being snappy on a lot of chipsets. Here it works great.
It doesn't get hot to the touch. Heck it needs to be running at 100% just to feel a little warm.
The battery runs a good 4.5 to 5 hours, even when you're really using it the whole time. Just drop the screen brightness a couple notches to get > 4 hours battery life. If you leave it at max, expect 2.5 to 3 hours tops.
Basically, this is a small, lightweight mini-laptop with full sized laptop performance and display for about the same price. If I hadn't been looking at notebooks for a friend who wanted a 10" unit, I wouldn't have seen this, and that would have been sad, because this thing is the perfect size for me and has the performance I need. I can toss it into my backpack and go.
Exactly what we needed.
After my last five year old Toshiba finally died, we went on the hunt to find a replacement. I did a lot of research and compared online, in store, etc. At the stores, the 17"+ screens looked nice but were really too heavy and defeated the purpose of having a laptop. The netbooks were too small and something I really didn't want to use everyday. I was first drawn to this nice Toshiba based on the overall design and features.
I am a dedicated Amazon shopper and receive the laptop about three weeks ago. I am very impressed with the laptop for a few reasons.
1. Portability. It is so easy to carry around and light enough where it doesn't bother me by sitting it on my lap.
2. Screen. The size is perfect, not too big and not too small. The LED screen is great and I really enjoy the clarity and color. Even in low lighting it doesn't hurt my eyes.
3. Keyboard. Great response and layout, feels more natural then even my larger laptop.
4. Battery life. I can use it the entire morning and not even need to go back and plug it in like my old laptop. Not sure who needs 8hr battery life, unless you are flying on an international flight...who can't get it back in an outlet once a day?
Overall, its a great laptop and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. It doesn't have an optical drive so I picked up a 16GB thumb drive to backup my data and create a recovery image (doesn't include a recovery disk--no optical drive). People see the laptop and think it costs $800+, which is a lot more than obviously for sale in the market. I wouldn't think twice about picking this laptop up again and highly recommended it.
Nice portable laptop
I've had this for a few weeks now and believe I can comment on this nice little laptop now. It's replacing a 7-6 year old Toshiba 15" that was a beast (Satellite A70). This little beauty is very light, portable, and suprisingly fast and efficient. Battery life has been close to 5-6 hours while running in Eco mode with WiFi on and a wireless USB mouse. Yes, it lacks an optical drive, (and I knew that going into this purchase) but I have not found that to be a detriment. I've seen them around for less than $60 when I finally decided to pick one up.
Don't worry about the other 1 star reviews - the reviewers did not fully understand what they were buying. One guy gave it 1 star because it didn't come with a full version of Office.... has anybody seen a laptop under 800 dollars that does??? Come on.... The lack of an optical drive also drives the ratings down but that's more due to the buyers not fully researching their purchase. Maybe they should rate themselves as 1-star buyers!
About the only thing I would add would be a backlit keyboard.
